Naturally all kinds of greenhouse gasses (such as CO2) are
present in the atmosphere. These gases ensure the heat of the
sun is not directly reflected, but remains around our planet
for a while to warm the earth. However, since the industrial
revolution, this delicate equilibrium has been distorted
causing too much heat being kept around our planet for an
extended period of time.
By burning fossil fuels such as gas, coal and oil we have
emitted enormous quantities of additional greenhouse gasses
causing the so-called greenhouse effect: the earth keeps
getting warmer as it were a greenhouse under constant light
from the sun.
The effects hereof become more visible everyday: polar ice is
melting, sea levels are rising and the number of ecological
desasters such as floods and droughts increases. The results
are already quite tangible, however experts expect an even
faster growth in both numbers and magnitude.

It all starts with saving energy. Think about energy efficient
heating, the use of energy saving light bulbs and adopting to a
fuel-saving way of driving. For many forms of power generation,
the burning of fossil fuels is necessary. However more
alternatives arise that are becoming easier to adopt to&
think about switching the green energy at home.
No matter how hard you try, living a fully carbon neutral life
is kind of impossible. As even using public transport causes
CO2 emissions, there remains a need to compensate for the
remaining amounts of emissions caused. By means of our
calculator, you can compute the exact amount of carbon dioxide
you emit& and have this compensated for by OCO2.
The moment we are using energy - thus emitting carbon dioxides
- we can compensate for this by preventing that the amount of
emissions caused by our use of energy occurs somewhere else on
earth at another point in time. By investing in various forms
of sustainable energy (e.g. solar, wind & water) this can
be achieved.
These investments can be made in a variety of sustainable
energy projects. OCO2 however only invests in those projects
adhering to the GoldStandard programme, pinpointing the most
efficient and effective projects. GoldStandard certification
includes effects on the local ecosystem, habitat, economic
opportunities etcetera. Read more on how we go about
compensation.
